Sandie, Saul, and Mount RainierThought I’d start reporting stuff from the Pacific Northwest…a la Pork Report style! Who wouldn’t write about the cool shit up here, right? :D And whatever happened to the Pork Reports?

Some background…

This story starts with Sandie getting a job at Boeing (as a geeky engineer) in Seattle during the summer of 2011. She left Raytheon in 2010, got another job in Dallas, became a ‘woman of leisure’, and finally got an offer from Boeing in a location that we thought would be cool to move to. We’d been together for a few years and were living together in sin, so we discussed it and then jumped at the opportunity.

So, when I heard that the 24 Hr Solo World Championships were going to be back in North America in 2012, I wanted to go back, and to do that I needed to race a qualifyling event, and the 24 Hours of Rocky Hill is indeed a qualifier.  To qualify you have to finish in the Top 10 of the category you want to compete in.  Since SS does not have a direct category, you have to complete in the Solo OPEN/PRO category.

Mike Frazier (Pigsley) and I did the 24 Hours in the Canyon at Palo Duro this past weekend (6/4/2011 – 6/5/2011). They had multiple races going on over the weekend – 24 and 12 hour, road and mountain bike courses, competitive and non-competitive, and multiple kids races. They advertise this event as the only one in the country running road and mountain bike simultaneously. I believe they said they had over 400 participants, which is a pretty good turnout, especially at this time of year out there (F’in hot).

Well here goes, my 1st ever blog post…

Jeff and I meet up at performance cycle in plano on friday morning and make tracks for amarillo. once there we get checked in and drive down into the canyon. we turn into the juniper camp sites where the event is being held and scout for a site. we find one tucked away by itself with an older canopy and a bunch of trees, not to far from the timing station, and close to the trail….perfect!

This year was a true breakout year for Big Pig Racing. In addition to numerous individual accomplishments, there were some proud and profound team moments as well. Two members, Rich “big pig” Szecsy and Ray “1+1=1” Porter both traveled to Canada to represent Big Pig Racing in the 24hr Solo World Championships, in the singlespeed division no less. Ray took 5th place and Rich took 8th place. While these may have been standout individual efforts, as a team there were some fairly substantial accomplishments. In November, Big Pig Racing had 9 racers enter the UltraCentric 6/12/24/48 Hr race. Big Pig Racing took home a two top finishes in the 6Hr (Rich “Big Pig” Szecsy 4th in Men’s Open, and Inna “seamonster” Innes 3rd in Women’s Open), a 1st place in the 12 Hr (Ray “1+1=1” Porter in Men’s SS), a 1st place in the 24Hr (Brian “porkchop” Brennfroeder 1st in SS), a 5th place in the 24 Hr (Ryan “Cobes” Coburn), and a 2nd place in the 24 Hr. (4 man team with Kevin “kstine” Witherstine, Randy “aggie88” Hancock, Danny “Gapp” Gappinger, and Stephen “ch4os” Thompson). After it was over, there was never a question in that event as to which team dominated the race.
