It all began for with this little race called the Dirty Kanza 200.  Mr Clean, Brad Green and I (including our good friends from Soul Craft Cycles, Bicycles Outback, The Bicycle Path, Bicycles Plus and Plano Cycles) started training for this 200 miles of gravel race in Kansas.  We were throwing down back to back 80 – 100′s, weekly.

Mike Frazier (Pigsley) and I did the 24 Hours in the Canyon at Palo Duro this past weekend (6/4/2011 – 6/5/2011). They had multiple races going on over the weekend – 24 and 12 hour, road and mountain bike courses, competitive and non-competitive, and multiple kids races. They advertise this event as the only one in the country running road and mountain bike simultaneously. I believe they said they had over 400 participants, which is a pretty good turnout, especially at this time of year out there (F’in hot).

Well here goes, my 1st ever blog post…

Jeff and I meet up at performance cycle in plano on friday morning and make tracks for amarillo. once there we get checked in and drive down into the canyon. we turn into the juniper camp sites where the event is being held and scout for a site. we find one tucked away by itself with an older canopy and a bunch of trees, not to far from the timing station, and close to the trail….perfect!

Where did they all go?  There were over 100 riders take off at 7 am…..only 61 finished?  That was one tuff day……whew!   The start was pretty smooth….just stay towards the front hit the climb and make a few passes improve my position before the single track. Took off with the “Pig Pack” and we all stayed fairly close until we rounded the curve and hit the climb.  Everyone here fell into their own pace…..me, I was feeling good and start to pull away from a few…..watched Matt and Brad pull away as well. Hit the single track and immediatly realized I was running WAY too much air…..bouncing and sliding around.  I pulled over and let some out and Chaos and a bunch of riders pass.  Go a few more yards and stop to drop a few more lbs. OK, now I running good…….time to catch the guys.  I (after some time) catch Chaos and fall in behind him slightly tired from the chase. NICE, I like the pace he’s setting so I figure I’ll “Shadow” him all day…….LOL.  Were just chatting away enjoying the pain….if you can imagine two guys who talk as little as he and I……….LOL.   Chaos is flying the downhills and I have to give chase after each one to catch up…luckily most are followed by climbs, which I was tackling better…so it all evened out.

Big Pig Racing Website Update

I volunteered some time ago to help update the Big Pig Racing website. After becoming a team member, I was surprised that the content of the website hadn’t been updated in about a year! I guess my geek skills will come in handy.

The plan is to make this a one-stop-shop for Big Pig members to post content (blog), get on the forum, and do some other things without having to go to multiple websites and need to have multiple user accounts. Hopefully it will be easy for everyone to use.

I recently stated in another ride rehash (Red River Riot) that I would NOT, I repeat NOOOOOT be racing in mud again. Too miserable and too much damage caused to the bike. How soon I ate those words! In part, because Luke ensured me that it wasn’t, “that bad” when he walked the trail on Friday afternoon. So I came… and I conquered! Yes! I said it! I’m STOKED! I mean really stoked! Especially, when I came so close to not making the trek at all. But then I read Big Daddy’s words, which in a nutshell stated, “If I don’t go it will be perfect weather and I’ll wish I had”. And excluding the actual trail, the weather was excellent! Besides, I had committed to Rachel to ride in support of her, so I felt obligated.
